Chapter 10

Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them the authority to throw out unclean spirits and to heal all illnesses and sicknesses. 2Now the names of the twelve apostles are: first Simon, called Peter and Andrew his brother, Jacob Zebedee’s son and his brother John, 3Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew the tax man, Jacob Alpheus’ son, Thaddeus, 4Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus.

5Jesus commanded these twelve apostles, “Don’t go near the Gentiles, and don’t go into the Samaritan cities. 6Instead, head for the lost sheep of Israel’s house. 7As y’all travel preach, ‘Heaven’s Empire is near!’ 8Heal the weak! Raise the dead! Clean the lepers! Throw out demons! You received freely, so give freely. 9Don’t take gold, silver, or copper as payment. 10Don’t take luggage, or two shirts, or sandals, or a staff. A worker deserves his food. 11In every city or village y’all come to, find out who’s worthy and stay there until you leave. 12When y’all go into a house, greet it. 13If the house is worthy, give it your peace. If not, take back your peace. 14And if there’s anyone who won’t welcome y’all, or listen to what y’all have to say, shake that house’s or that city’s dust off your feet. 15Yes, I tell y’all. Sodom and Gomorrah would have it better on Judgement Day than that city!

16“Look at this. I’m sending you out as sheep in the middle of wolves. So be wise like the snakes and innocent like the doves. 17Watch out for the men, they’ll hand y’all over to the courts and beat y’all in their synagogues. 18You’ll be brought before leaders and kings because of me so y’all can testify to them and the gentiles. 19When y’all are handed over, don’t worry about what you’re going to say or how you’re going to say it, your words will be given to y’all at the time. 20Y’all won’t be the ones speaking, it’ll be your Father’s Spirit that’ll speak through you.

21“Brother will betray brother, father against child, and children will stand up against parents and they’ll execute them. 22And everyone will hate y’all because of my name. The one who endures till the end will be rescued. 23When they chase y’all in this city, run away to the next one. Yes, I tell y’all. You won’t get through all the cities in Israel before the Son of Man comes.

24“The disciple isn’t above the teacher, and the slave isn’t above his master. 25It’s enough for the disciple to be like his teacher and the slave to be like his master. If they call the head of the house Beelzebul, they’ll bad mouth the rest of the house even more.

26“So, don’t be afraid of them. There’s nothing that’s covered that won’t be uncovered. And there’s nothing hidden that won’t be known. 27What I say to y’all in the dark, say in the light. And what I whisper in your ear, preach from the rooftops. 28Don’t be afraid of the people who can kill the body, but can’t kill the soul. But fear the one who can kill the body and the soul in hell. 29Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny? Not one of them can fall onto the land without your Father allowing it. 30Even the hairs on your head’ve been numbered. 31So don’t be afraid. You’re better than a lot of sparrows. 32Every person who confesses me in front of men, I’ll confess him in front of my Heavenly Father. 33Whoever denies me in front of men, I’ll deny him in front of my Heavenly Father.

34“Don’t think I’m here to bring peace to the land. I’m not here to bring peace, but to bring the sword! 35I’ve come to split apart a man from his father, a daughter from her mother, a bride against her mother-in-law, 36and a man’s enemies will be the ones living in his house! 37Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me isn’t worthy of me. Anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me isn’t worthy of me. 38Anyone who doesn’t pick up his cross and follow me isn’t worthy of me. 39The person who finds his life will destroy it. And the person who destroyed his life because of me will find it.

40“Anyone who welcomes y’all, welcomes me. And anyone who welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. 41Anybody who welcomes a prophet as a prophet will get a prophet’s reward. Anybody who welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will get a righteous person’s reward. 42Whoever gives a drink of water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple won’t lose his reward.
