Chapter 2

Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea during the reign of King Herod. Now, look! Wise men from the east came to Jerusalem 2and said, “Where’s the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and we came to honor him.” 3After hearing this, King Herod and the whole city of Jerusalem were worried, 4so he gathered together the chief priests and the scholars and asked them where Christ would be born. 5They told him, “In Bethlehem in Judea. Because it was said through the prophet, 6'and you Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are not at all the least among the leaders of Judah; because from you will come a leader who will shepherd My people, Israel.’” 7So then Herod quietly called the wise men together and found out from them the exact time they saw the star. 8Then he sent them to Bethlehem and told them, “Once you get there, find out where the small child is. When you find him, tell me so that I can come down and honor him, too.”

9After listening to the King, the wise men started out for Bethlehem and the star that they saw in the east now led them there. When they arrived, it stood above the small child. 10When they saw the star, they celebrated a lot! 11They came to the house and there they saw the child with his mother, Mary. They kneeled down, worshiped him, and opened the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh that they brought for him. 12Then they were warned in a dream to not go back to Herod, so they took a different way back to their country.

13After they left, one of God’s angels appeared to Joseph in his dream and said, “Get up! Take the child and his mother to Egypt, and stay there till I tell you to come back. Herod is looking for the child. He is going to try to kill him! 14When he woke up, Joseph took Jesus and Mary to Egypt in the night. 15He stayed there until Herod died. So, what God said through the prophet came true: “I call My son out of Egypt.”

16When Herod found out that the wise men fooled him, he became very angry. So he sent men to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem that were younger than two years, because that is when the wise men told him they first saw the star. 17This fulfilled what was said through the prophet Jeremiah, 18"A sound was heard in Rama! There’s a lot of crying and screaming. Rachel cries for her children! She can’t be comforted, because they’re not there.”

19When Herod died, God’s angel appeared to Joseph in a dream 20and told him, “Get up! Take the child and his mother back to Israel. Those who’ve been looking for him have died.” 21When Joseph woke up, he took Jesus and Mary back to Israel. 22But then he heard that Archelaos had taken his father’s place as King of Judea. Joseph was afraid to go back there. Then he was told in a dream to go to Galilee, 23and he stayed there in the city of Nazareth. This fulfilled what was said through the prophet, “He will be called a Nazarene.”
