Chapter 8

When he came down from the mount, huge crowds followed him. 2A leper came to worship him and said to him, “Master, if you want to, you can clean me.” 3Jesus stretched out his hand, touched the leper, and said, “ I want to, be clean,” and immediately he was cleaned of the leprosy. 4Then Jesus said to him, “ See to it you don’t tell anyone about this. Leave, show yourself to the priest, and offer a gift as Moses commanded as a testimony.

5When he came to Capernaum, a centurion came to him and pleaded with him, 6"Master, my boy servant is laying in the house paralyzed and in a lot of pain.” 7Jesus said to him, “I’ll come and heal him.” 8But the centurion said, “I’m not worthy enough for you to come under my roof. Just say a word, and he’ll be cured. 9I’m a man under authority, too. And I have soldiers under me. I’ll say to one, “Go,” and he goes, and to another, “Come,” and he comes. I say to my slave, “Do,” and he does. 10Jesus heard this and marveled. He said to his followers, “Yes, I tell y’all, I haven’t even found such faith from anyone in Israel. 11I tell you, many will come from the east and west and will be seated with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in Heaven’s Empire. 12 But the heirs of the Empire will be thrown into the outermost darkness, and there’ll be crying and grinding of teeth.” 13And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go. Let it come to you just as you trusted.” His boy servant was cured that hour.

14When Jesus came to Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law laying in bed with a fever. 15Jesus touched her hand and the fever left her. She got up and began to serve him. 16That evening, they brought many people who were possessed with demons to him. He threw out the demons with just a word, and healed all the sick. 17So, what was said through the Prophet Isaiah was fulfilled, “he received our weaknesses and carried our sicknesses.”

18When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he commanded to go to the other side of the sea. 19And a scholar came to him and said, “Teacher, I’ll follow you wherever you go.” 20Jesus said to him, “ The foxes have holes and the birds make nests. But the Son of Man has nowhere to sleep.” 21Another of his disciples said, “Master, let me leave and bury my father first.” 22But Jesus said to him, “ Follow me, and let the dead bury the dead.

23He got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24And look, a storm formed on the sea, and the boat was covered by the waves. But Jesus slept. 25They woke him and said, “Master, save us! We’re being killed!” 26Jesus says, “ Why are you cowards, you faithless people?” Then he stood up, and yelled at the winds and the sea, and they were calmed. 27The men were amazed. They said, “What is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him?”

28When he got to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men came out of the graves and met him. They were so strong, that no one could go through there. 29They looked at Jesus and shouted, “What do you want with us, Son of God? Did you come here early to torment us?” 30Far from them was a large herd of pigs grazing. 31They begged him, “If you throw us out, at least send us to the pigs.” 32Jesus said to them, “ Go!” and they went into the pigs and the herd ran off the cliff into the sea and drowned. 33The people tending to the herd ran off into the city and told everyone of the demon-possessed men. 34Then everyone in the city went to meet Jesus and begged him to go to the other side of the sea, away from their country.
